Blackpink Talks Debut Album And Their Dedicated Fans: ‘We’re Very Grateful For How The World Sees Us’
In the past, the title of the biggest girl group in the world has gone to acts like The Supremes, Destiny’s Child, the Pussycat Dolls, and most recently, Fifth Harmony. Now, it belongs solely to Blackpink, and there’s no questions about their supremacy.
Blackpink are certainly a part of the K-pop wave that’s taking over the planet, but they also stand out on their own. The four women who make up the band—Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa—just recently dropped their debut album, the simply-titled The Album, which launched inside the top 10 on charts everywhere, ensuring them yet another spot in countless history books. 2020 also saw the quartet team up with some of the biggest musicians in the world, including Cardi B, Selena Gomez and Lady Gaga, landing some of the biggest hits of their career by doing so.
Now, as a year that was both fantastic to and hard for the most successful all-female musical act in the world comes to a close, the singers are preparing for an online-only YouTube-exclusive (due to coronavirus-related restrictions, of course) concert titled The Show, which is bound to be a must-see for their followers and a massive moneymaker for Blackpink and those they work with.
I spoke with all four members of Blackpink (some via a translator) about their upcoming online concert, their debut album and the power of their incredible fan base, known simply as “Blinks.”
Hugh McIntyre: Let me say congrats on the massive year you have had. Why don’t you tell me a bit about The Show?
Jennie: The Show is our first online concert that we’ve been waiting to bring to our fans. We kind of wanted to prepare a Christmas gift for everyone who went through a lot, who worked hard this year. Even though it’s an online concert, we’re trying our best to express the show to its fullest. So, trying different things, anything that we can take advantage of being online. We really hope our fans enjoy it. Yeah, we’re very excited.
McIntyre: You just announced The Show, but how long have you been working on setting this up?
Jisoo: So we originally had the world tour prepared around early this year, which we thought would have been possible by this summer. But unfortunately, due to circumstances, we couldn’t have the offline concerts. So that’s when we started thinking deeply about the online concert.
McIntyre: This show gives you an opportunity to perform songs you’ve never done live before. You’re going to introduce them to some people. Is there one track in particular you are really excited to perform for the first time?
Lisa: There will be performances that we’re showing to our audience for the first time. So the songs from our album we haven’t really had a chance to perform yet…all the songs. So I hope you guys look out for those stages.
McIntyre: It’s only been a few weeks since you dropped The Album. What was it like to watch that explode all around the world?
Rosé: Well, it took quite a long time for us to come out with a full album. It took four years for us to release the full-length album. So it meant a lot to us personally. For that to be in their hands and have our fans react to it in such a positive way and have them enjoy, it meant a lot to us. When we’re preparing for the album, it’s always made fully by the love and support of our fans. I think it meant a lot to us that they enjoyed it. We heard that new listeners enjoyed the album as much as we did. We’ll definitely continue to work harder to give everybody the best content we can.
McIntyre: I have my personal favorites, but do you all have a favorite from the album?
Lisa: Oh, my favorite song in the album is “Pretty Savage” because it’s super Blackpink.
McIntyre: I have often referred to Blackpink as the biggest girl group in the world. Is that a title you all appreciate? Do you find it intimidating? How do you feel about being labeled that way?
Jennie: First of all, we’re very honored to be named the biggest girl group because we all started wanting to be that. And it’s hard to see the reality where people actually call us that. We feel very responsible…and pressure. We want to think… Even though it’s a big title and with the amount of love and support we receive… I guess we want to keep doing what we do, be a group of positive influences and keep making great music for you guys. We’re very grateful for how the world sees us and it gives us motivation.
McIntyre: I write about Blackpink a lot because every song, every album, everything… You make history on the charts in America. It’s incredible to see what you have been able to do. Do you pay attention to things like sales and streaming and where you rank on the charts? Are those numbers important to you?
Rosé: I think we would express it more as something we’re very grateful for… Something that we can celebrate with our fans. It really matters more that our fans are enjoying the content that we release and the fact that we can get such great feedback. With numbers, at times can be very rewarding for us and our fans. We’re very, very grateful.
McIntyre: Speaking of your fans, it’s impossible to talk about Blackpink without talking about Blinks. Do you ever go online and see what they’re saying about a new song or a video? Or maybe there’s some news story that happened and they’re getting heated about it. How tuned into what they’re saying are you all?
Jisoo: Yes, we always listen to our fans’ feedback and monitor their responses because in these times, especially when we can’t meet them face to face, the feedback we get through social media is more valuable. So we want to use it and respond to it as much as possible.
McIntyre: The world is in a very weird place. What would you love to do next year that maybe you couldn’t in 2020?
Jennie: That’s a hard question. Well, it was a very busy year for Blackpink and we’re very happy to end it with this great opportunity that we have with the YouTube online concert. So we hope everybody can have a happy 2020. And in 2021, it would be really nice… Our fans, that’s the first thing on our minds and continuing making great music and try to find ways to communicate with our fans, even in these situations.

McIntyre: Of course it does! I’ll tack one on to the last question. I’m especially amazed at your fans because they don’t just listen to your music. They’re so organized. They know how to work the system and charts and they talk to one another online. It’s incredible to see. What would you say to the Blackpink fans that go hardest for you online?
Rosé: We’re surprised every day. We’re like, how can somebody be so supportive of a person? It’s just unbelievable. I think we really commend them. They work very hard for us and it just blows our minds how they can be so supportive of somebody else. We learned from our fans too.
We want to say we’re very thankful for how hard they try, how much support they give us and we appreciate it. We really do. And we want to work as hard with them, so we can achieve more things together. It’s a great relationship that we have.

Mclntyre: 방금 THE SHOW를 발표하셨는데, 얼마나 오래전부터 이 프로젝트를 준비하셨나요?
지수: 사실 올해에 월드투어가 예정되어있었어요. 여름 쯤에 할거라고 생각하고 있었는데, 아쉽게도 지금 상황 때문에 오프라인 콘서트를 진행할 수 없게 되었어요. 그래서 그떄부터 온라인 콘서트에 대해 진지하게 생각하기 시작했어요.

Mclntyre: THE ALBUM 이 공개된지 아직 몇주 밖에 지나지 않았는데, 전세계에서 폭발적인 반응을 보이는 것에 대해 어떻게 생각했나요?
로제: 음, 저희가 정규앨범을 내기까지 꽤 오랜 시간이 걸렸어요. 첫 정규앨범을 발매하기까지 4년이 걸렸거든요. 그래서 개인적으로도 이 앨범이 저희에게 주는 의미가 커요. 그런 결과물이 이제 팬분들의 손에 있고 팬분들이 좋은 반응을 보이고 즐기는 것을 보면 저희에게는 큰 의미가 있어요. 저희가 앨범을 준비할때는 항상 팬분들의 사랑과 응원으로 인해서 만들어지는거 거든요. 그래서 팬분들이 좋아해주는게 많은 의미가 있어요. 또, 새로운 리스너들이 저희 앨범을 즐겨주셨다고 들었어요. 저희는 앞으로도 최고의 결과물을 여러분에게 선보일 수 있도록 더 열심히 노력하겠습니다.
Mclntyre: 저는 앨범에서 가장 맘에 드는 곡이 있는데, 혹시 여러분은 앨범에서 가장 좋아하는 곡이 있나요?
리사: 아, 제가 이번 앨범에서 제일 좋아하는 곡은 Pretty Savage 에요. 왜냐면 그 곡이 엄청 블랙핑크 하거든요.
Mclntyre: 저는 종종 블랙핑크가 세계에서 가장 큰 걸그룹이라고 언급해왔어요. 혹시 이런 타이틀이 마음에 드시나요? 아니면 좀 부담스럽다고 느끼나요? 이런식으로 타이틀이 붙는것에 대해서 어떻게 생각하세요?
제니: 우선으로, 가장 큰 걸그룹이라고 칭해주는거에 대해서는 저희 모두 영광으로 생각해요. 처음부터 항상 그런걸 목표로 해왔기 떄문이에요. 그리고 현실적으로 사람들이 저희를 그렇게 불러주는게 잘 믿기지가 않아요. 저희는 아주 책임감을 느끼고… 또 부담감을 느껴요. 저희가 생각하기에… 이게 대단한 많은 사랑과 응원으로 만들어진 타이틀이지만 … 저희는 앞으로도 저희가 해왔던 대로 할 것 같아요. 긍정적인 영향을 주고, 좋은 음악을 만드는 그룹이 되고 싶어요. 세상이 저희를 좋게 봐주셔서 정말 감사하게 생각하고, 그런게 저희에게 동기를 부여해줘요.
Mclntyre: 저는 블랙핑크에 대해서 많은 글들을 써요. 왜냐하면 여러분의 모든 노래, 앨범, 그리고 모든 게… 미국에서 새로운 역사를 써내려가고 있잖아요. 어떻게 이런 일들을 할 수 있는지 믿기지가 않아요. 혹시 앨범 판매량이나, 스트리밍 횟수, 차트 랭킹 같은 것에 신경을 쓰는 편인가요? 그런 숫자들이 여러분에게 중요한가요?
로제: 우리는 그런 사랑을 받은 만큼 더 많이 표현해드리고 싶어요. 뭔가.. 팬분들과 함께 축하할 수 있는 방향으로요. 저희가 발표하는 콘텐츠들을 팬분들이 즐겨주시고, 또 함께 좋은 피드백들을 받을 수 있다는게 중요한것 같아요. 유의미한 숫자로 저희와 팬분들은 함께 보람을 느낄 수 있는 것 같아요. 저희는 정말 정말 감사하게 생각해요.
Mclntrye: 팬분들 이야기가 나온 김에, 블링크를 뺴놓고 블랙핑크를 이야기 하기란 불가능하죠. 혹시 온라인에서 블링크들이 새로운 음악이나 영상에 대해서 이야기하는걸 보나요? 아니면 어떤 핫한 소식에 대해 이야기하는 것을 본다던가. 블링크들이 이야기하는거에 대해 얼마나 귀를 기울이나요?
지수: 네, 저희는 항상 저희 팬분들의 피드백과 답변들을 모니터 해요. 왜냐면 지금같은 시기는 특히 더 팬분들과 직접 대면할 수 없으니까, 그런 소셜 미디어를 통한 피드백은 아주 가치 있거든요. 그래서 가능한 한 그런 피드백들을 수용하려고 하고, 답해주려고 노력해요.
Mclntyre: 지금 세계는 정말 이상한 사태에 놓여있죠. 혹시 내년에는 2020년도에는 해보지 못한 어떤 일들을 하고 싶나요?
제니: 어려운 질문이네요. 음, 블랙픙크에게 올해는 정말 바쁜 해였고, 유튜브 온라인 콘서트라는 멋진 기회를 통해 올해를 마무리 할 수 있게 되어서 정말 기뻐요. 그래서 저희는 모든 분들이 행복한 2020년을 보낼 수 있길 바래요. 그리고 2021년에는… 팬분들에게 계속해서 좋은 음악을 만들어 보이고, 이런 상황에서도 팬분들과 소통할 수 있는 방법들을 찾고 싶어요. 이게 답변이 되었으면 좋겠네요!

로제: 저희는 항상 놀라요. 어떻게 한 사람이 이렇게 까지 다른 사람을 지지할 수 있는지.. 정말 믿을 수 없을만큼 놀라워요. 저희는 정말 감사하게 생각하고 있어요(원문은 칭찬하다 라는 뜻인데 약간 의역). 그들이 저희를 위해서 정말 열심히 해주시고, 그걸 보면서 저희는 헌신적인 지지에 대해서 정말 놀라요. 저희도 팬분들에게 많이 배우게 되요.
